    Description
Maurice Ravel, thirty-nine, was as war-intoxicated as most Frenchmen, as World War I erupted in Europe in July 1914. Small and frail, he had been rejected by the army as physically unfit. After also failing to join the Air Force, Ravel eventually became a truck driver for the 13th Artillery Regiment in March 1915. He named his truck "Adélaïde" and sometimes signed his letters "Chauffeur Ravel." Driving conditions were exhausting and extremely hazardous, frequently involving the transportation of war material at nighttime, under heavy enemy bombardment. Ravel's health quickly faded, and after the death of his mother, he was discharged. Shortly after, "Le Tombeau de Couperin" was written in which he dedicated each of its movements to a friend who had fallen at the front. In addition to Ravel's Le Tombeau de Couperin, Douglas Weeks will be performing Bach's Prelude and Fugue in F Major, Schubert's Sonata in A Major, and Chopin's Polonaise-Fantasie.
