Chautauqua History Alive Festival 6/16/2017 - 6/25/2017

The History Alive Festival is a chance to experience history like no other. Communities come together under the big top to laugh, cry, and discuss the ties that bind us—our shared story.

Discuss the civil war with Lincoln, ask Maya Angelou why the caged bird sings, hear Walter Cronkite say, “and that’s the way it is.”

Experience this ten day, two weekend long festival of non-stop live history and fun for the whole family. Experience 30+ free performances throughout the Upstate led by nationally acclaimed historical interpreters.

  • Listen in as President Lincoln redefines American democracy
  • Rise up and sing with poet Maya Angelou
  • March for social justice with Cesar Chavez
  • Step inside the revolutionary book Silent Spring, with Rachel Carson;
  • And once again as the nightly news unfolds, “You Are There” with Walter Cronkite.

There’s nothing like the experience outdoors under the Chautauqua tent or in a beautiful park on a summer evening. But if you like your Chautauqua experience indoors in air-conditioned comfort, we have that, too.

You don’t want to miss these spell binding performances, guaranteed to transport you back in time. So buckle up, and get ready to step into the past and watch history come to life.

Salsa at Sunset 7/8/2017 6:00 PM - 7/8/2017 10:00 PM

The Hottest Summer Night in SC begins in Downtown Greenville on July 8th! [Greenville, SC]—(formerly Salsa Under the Stars) kicks off its dynamic summer series of live Latin music and dancing!

The free public event, celebrates Latin culture through music and dance. With over 500 people expected to attend each night, the event will take place at Graham Plaza in front of the Peace Center on Main Street July 8th. Hosted by Upstate International and Pura Alegría Dance Company, Salsa at Sunset will feature a live band, free dance lesson and cash bar from 6:00 p.m. to 10 p.m. on each evening.

Salsa at Sunset provides an opportunity for those unable to easily engage in the arts to experience the joy of cultural music and dance, while at the same time encouraging different communities to participate together. Art, whether it is music, dance, painting or something else, is a universal language. Upstate International and Pura Alegria are delighted to share 3 nights of free music and dance, connecting people in ways that resonate deeply with who we are as human beings and breaks down the barriers that otherwise keep us apart. By providing the opportunity to engage with people from different cultures, we continue to build a stronger, more enlightened and tolerant community.

The Marcel Portilla Band, led by Marcel Portilla, a highly regarded South American singer/songwriter, headlines the June event with great energy and enthusiasm. Originally from Cali, Colombia, Portilla’s goal is to use his music to spread a message of diversity, love, and peace. The band plays a fusion of New Latin, Salsa, Tropical, Pop, Rock, Blues, Reggae and original compositions. Pura Alegría Dance Company leads a complimentary beginners’ salsa class at the start of each event. The plaza fills with 100s of people learning to dance the basic salsa steps, building community and setting the tone for a fun, family-friendly evening of music and dance under the stars.

Banjo Extravaganza 7/15/2017 10:00 AM - 7/15/2017 4:00 PM

Come join your friends at Hagood Mill on Saturday, July 16th as we host a “Banjo Extravaganza” featuring Nitrograss with Charles Wood.  This sonically unique Asheville based band creates a carefree and exciting atmosphere of pure acoustic pleasure.  The percussion rhythms of two time national banjo champion Charles Wood lay the foundation for the band’s unique style.  Wood is a veteran showman with appearances on “The Late Show with David Letterman” and “A Prairie Home Companion” with Garrison Keillor.  Wood has toured in Austria and Germany with The Lonesome Road Band and taught at the esteemed Munich, Germany Banjo Camp in 2009.  Wood has also starred at many regional and national Bluegrass festivals.  Other members of Nitrograss include Caleb Hanks – mandolin, Micah Hanks - guitar, and Dakota “Smokey” Waddell on the stand up base.  This promises to be a very entertaining show highlighted by this unique and energetic band.

Charles Wood and Nitrograss will be performing from 1:00 until 3:00 pm, so don’t miss out on this great opportunity to witness one of the nation’s best banjo players in action.

We have a wonderful opening act on July 16th.  The Blue Ridge Rounders (Bob and Amy Buckingham) play traditional, country roots music and Appalachian dance tunes. It is old time music made for now. It is the sound of the banjo and fiddle intertwined with the singing of old ballads and peppered with other instruments such as guitar and stand-up bass.  They have just recorded their second CD, “Chickens in Paradise”.  The live music will begin around 11:30 am so don’t be late.

As a special treat for our musician friends, Hagood Mill will be offering variety of “Old Time” instrument workshops on July 16th as well.

Bob Buckingham of the Blue Ridge Rounders will be hosting a morning workshop (10:30 – 11:30 am) emphasizing the intricate and melodic “Claw Hammer” style of strumming most often associated with the old time banjo.  This workshop will be free of charge.

Notice to ALL Fiddlers:  The time is rapidly approaching for the South Carolina Old Time Fiddling Championship at Hagood Mill on September 17. We have arranged for a two hour workshop (July 16, 10:00am til noon) to sharpen skills in Appalachian “Old Time” fiddling which is the featured fiddle style of the competition. This workshop will be taught by Marion “Weasel” Boatwright of Brevard, North Carolina. He will showcase bowing style, competition song selection, and how to create dynamism in your performance. If you are a bluegrass fiddler and want to expand your skills or an old time style fiddler and want to ramp up your performance, this class is for you. It will also help new fiddlers put their skills on the right path. The cost for the class is $5.00 to be paid 15 minutes before class starts.

The gristmill and other demonstrations will be running from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm.

As always we encourage visitors to bring their favorite old time instruments and join in on the “open jam” which takes place throughout the day under the ancient cedar beside our beloved 1791 log cabin.

Admission is free to both the Hagood Mill Site and the Hagood Creek Petroglyph Site; however there is a $5.00 parking fee which is used to help Hagood Mill.

So pack up the car, head on out, and don’t forget to bring a lawn chair or blanket.

There will be lots of other things to see on July 16th as Hagood Mill hosts a variety of folk life and traditional arts demonstrations.  There will be blacksmithing, bowl-digging, flint knapping, chair-caning, moonshining, broom-making, basket-making, pottery, quilting, spinning, knitting, weaving, woodcarving, metal-smithing, leather working, bee keeping and more! You can ask questions of the artists and make a purchase of their Traditional Arts to take home.

The Centerpiece of the Hagood Mill historic site is the water-powered 1845 gristmill. It is one of the finest examples of nineteenth century technology in the Upcountry and operates just as it has for the last century-and-a-half.  The mill will be running throughout the day. In the old mill, fresh stone-ground corn meal, grits, and wheatflour will be available.  In addition rye flour, Basmati rice flour, oat flour, oatmeal, popping corn meal, and grits, organic yellow corn meal and grits, and buckwheat flour are produced and may be available.  Hagood Mill cookbooks and a variety of other mill related items are also available.

There promises to be lots to do and lots of fun! So, come on out, share a picnic, or grab a plate of great food on site from the Gatehouse Restaurant and enjoy a special day at the Hagood Mill.

The Hagood Mill historic site is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm all year long. The Mill operates, rain or shine, for a special festival the third Saturday of every month.

The Hagood Mill islocated just 3 miles north of Pickens off Highway 178 or 5 ½ miles south of Cherokee Foothills Scenic Hwy 11 just off Highway 178 at 138 Hagood Mill Road.

For additional information, please contact the Hagood Mill at (864) 898-2936 or check out our website at www.visitpickenscounty.com/calendar

Salsa at Sunset 8/12/2017 6:00 PM - 8/12/2017 10:00 PM

The bands play a fusion of New Latin, Salsa, Tropical, Pop, Rock, Blues, Reggae and original compositions. Pura Alegría Dance Company leads a complimentary beginners’ salsa class at the start of each event. The plaza fills with 100s of people learning to dance the basic salsa steps, building community and setting the tone for a fun, family-friendly evening of music and dance under the stars.

Salsa at Sunset 9/16/2017 6:00 PM - 9/16/2017 10:00 PM

Saturday, September 16th will feature the band: Orquesta Mayor. They will play a fusion of New Latin, Salsa, Tropical, Pop, Rock, Blues, Reggae and original compositions. Pura Alegría Dance Company leads a complimentary beginners’ salsa class at the start of each event. The plaza fills with 100s of people learning to dance the basic salsa steps, building community and setting the tone for a fun, family-friendly evening of music and dance under the stars.
